Knotty Pine Walls in the Master Bedroom: How to Decorate a Unique Space

It’s been a few years since this article was published, but we thought we’d bring it back out of the archives and share it again, for our followers who asked to see photos of knotty pine in some of our rooms!  ~~~~~ Our master bedroom features vintage knotty pine walls, which is a bit uncommon and can be a challenge when trying to figure out how to decorate the space. If you also have knotty pine walls in your master bedroom, you know all about this challenge first-hand.  It can help to see examples of how others have decorated their knotty pine master bedroom.  So, I thought I would share a few photos of our bedroom with you. In going about decorating the room, one of the most important issues I learned was that there needs to be a balance of light to offset the darkness of the wood walls.  This can be accomplished easily with a light-colored bedspread and white sheets. You may be tempted to buy new furnishings and bedding, but I found that I didn't need to....

Adding Padded Seat Covers to Bar Stools

This project was fairly simple and the stools with their new padded seat covers looked so nice that I thought I'd share a few photos.  Recently, we picked up a couple of old bar stools for dirt cheap at an online auction, for using in our kitchen. After cleaning up the stools, we decided to staple padded covers onto the seats.  I purchased the canvas fabric, called Watercolor Houses , from Jo-Ann Fabric.  My sister has added padded seat covers to chairs a number of times over the years and I've always thought they looked so nice (she has an amazing eye for color and design!). With her creative ideas to inspire me, I decided to give it a try.   For about $16 at Jo-Ann, I purchased two green foam seat covers.  I already had some white felt for laying between the foam and the fabric. (The white felt isn't really necessary; I just decided to use it to give the fabric a smoother look, since I already had it in my fabric drawer.) The only tools that were nee...

More Photos of Vintage Knotty Pine Walls

Our vintage knotty pine walls seem to be drawing some amount of interest from the blog's followers, and so I thought I would share a few more photos today.  If you peek into the office where I'm writing, you can see the knotty pine continues throughout the entire room. Don't you just love  rounded passageways? It's one of the quirks we enjoy in this 1940's home. Continuing through the office to the top of the stairwell is another spot worth sharing.  It's a delightfully vintage built-in linen cupboard. Even the inside walls of these cupboards is knotty pine.  I moved some blankets aside so you can see the back wall of one of the shelves:   Such solid craftsmanship can be found in older homes. My family is embraced by the warmth of knotty pine. I thought I'd share one of the other rooms that we worked on recently.  This entryway, which is from the side door into our house, needed a fresh coat of paint.  The space is br...

Knotty Pine Walls in the Parlor

See eight rooms featuring knotty pine walls with white trim inside this unique home. In this e-book, you'll have the opportunity to peek inside a vintage Cape Cod house before, during and after renovation, as the family restored the home to its former glory. Only available on Amazon (for just a couple dollars),  click to download your copy  (for easily reading on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC using the  free Kindle app ).  See the book on Amazon .   Beautifully told story of a house coming to life by caring new owners. This House with Knotty Pine is so lucky to have a second chance at life, and to not have been painted over. When the family first began decorating this home that featured knotty pine walls with white trim, they searched and searched online to find photos of similar homes.  They weren't sure how to go about adding furniture, what fabric choices were best, and whether or not the house would look dark and gloomy with all their belongings in it....

Decorating a Living Room with Knotty Pine Walls

Ever since we bought our old farmhouse, I've been slightly worried about how difficult decorating a living room with knotty pine walls might be. I shouldn't have worried. What a cozy-looking living room we have, with these 73-year-old solid knotty pine walls. Knotty pine walls are coming back into style. While there are many articles out there about how to paint knotty pine walls, we figured it was worth a shot to see what the space looked like finished, as we could always paint the walls later if we decided we couldn't live with them. So far, so good - I'm pretty happy with how our vintage knotty pine walls look in the living room at this point. I haven't hung any pictures on the walls yet, but as you can see from the living room photo above, the space actually doesn't have a dark depressing feel at all. The darkness of the walls and floors is offset by a white ceiling, light-colored area rug, and white trim around the floors, windows, and doors, which c...
